SIMILARITIES BETWEEN COMPUTER AND BIOLOGICAL VIRUSES[VIRII]

There were a few sources used for this report. However, the one that I attempted to model after most was the UCSUSA Ride-Hailing Climate Risks report. The UCSUSA report made really good use of spacing and visuals to complement the layout and perfect use of elements which would normally be seen on a professionally developed website. The use of colors to contrast and make the reading not only easy on the eyes but entertaining to the eyes, also. The topic of the report is something that’s very concerning because it relates to the vast majority of the people in this generation and even of those past because of how the landscape of the ride-hailing industry has drastically changed within a matter of years and the appearance of a couple applications.

The report brings up all relevant topics and subtopics to the topic of ride-hailing and the author(s) even included taxis and personal cars into the comparison in order to include as many variables as possible and prove their point to the audience. Although, the report seems to be aimed at pushing the audience toward making an electric vehicle the prospect of their next car purchase if that’s something that they’re going to do. The report demonstrates the opinions of electric vehicles in the United States and with other countries around the world, which may persuade anyone who is concerned about the environment and want to have a positive impact on the world they live in.

In terms of design, the colors used are a very calming blue. In the graphs, anything emphasizing the objective of the author is colored in magenta, which is a contrast to the calming blue color which is prevalent in the rest of the report. The headlines for text and data visualization are subtly attention grabbing while not being too different from the rest of the report. I wanted to achieve this same thing with my report. I attempted to utilize visualized data from a blog post by Odi-X; a site which has a webapp to remove malware from documents. The blog post is one which compared Coronavirus to Malware, as it’s a topic that I’m genuinely interested in. The visuals were right in line with what I had in mind. To make them stand out within my report, I added a border to each picture.

For my report, I made use of three other reports aside from the Ride-Hailing Climate Risks report. I attempted to combine their format with the format of the Ride-Hailing Climate Risks. These reports also provided data which I included in my report for information regarding biological viral infections, since it’s been quite some time since taking a science course. There was difficult on my end when it came to figuring out how much data should be provided for use in my report. I’d like for my report to be targeted to people who are interested to see the similarities between computer viruses and biological viruses because with nanotechnology, biochemical technology and computer code increasingly innovating, they will all intertwine in due time.

The Origin and Evolution of Viruses as Molecular Organisms is a report that I used in order to determine the origin and history of biological viruses, as with other sources and probably due to the lack of documentation from the time viruses started on planet earth; there was nothing to provide.

Another source: An Introduction to Computer Viruses: Problems and Solutions. Although I am very familiar with the topic of computer viruses, it’s good to have sources that will reinforce the knowledge and give a point of reference to my report’s audience of readers. Since the majority of individuals who deal with computer malware are very familiar that both biological and computer viruses are similar and don’t need a reminder; using a little bit of information from this was helpful for me to reference and attempt to use simpler wording in order to get someone from zero to understanding of the similarities by the time they’re done reading my report.

The third source which was used for the report is the report titled Diagnosis and Treatment of Viral Infections. Although this report was helpful, I couldn’t include a lot of what was included because it was too detailed, so I made an attempt to reiteration through summarization. The design of the Diagnosis and Treatment of Viral Infections was not visually appealing because it was a very old typesetting and overall format yet it was very informative.

There was quite a bit of information that I didn’t include in my report because that would have gone too deep and been too niche. I made sure to use justified columns yet the formatting of the first page became a headache because I was attempting to put borders around the TLDR section. Initially, I wanted to put borders around everything and have each border designed with a protruding piece that would be complementary to the next body of text yet that proved to be very difficult with Microsoft Word. It would’ve given a puzzle-like design to the report, just like attempting to figure out what malware is doing when the source code isn’t available to a malware analyst. It would have been a nice touch to add to it in order to give a simulation of a perspective into the duties of a malware analyst.

Initially, I had plans of adding a meme of Bill Gates and his experience with viruses, creating the operating system most vulnerable to computer viruses and moving on from digital to physical but it became difficult to fit it into the design. Adding that and an explanation of how it’s relevant to the report would have made the page count over 7.

As for effects on the audience, I believe that this report will provide insight to the introductory reader about the similarities between ourselves and machines in addition to the differences. The differences such as we’ve been around longer than artificial intelligence so the complexity of computers has not reached the level yet, although civilization is on its way there. It also provides a paradigm shift to the reader to have an understanding of how computer viruses come about and touches on why security features are important because vulnerabilities can be exploited and leveraged for a threat agent to deliver malware to their system and propagate it to other systems.
